4 TIPS FOR A SMOOTH BACK-TO-SCHOOL

Written by Emma Dowou | 09 August 2024

As the new academic year approaches, it’s time to start preparing for the first day of school. Whether you’re a seasoned Haut-Lac School family or about to join our Swiss international community, setting up good habits early on can help make the transition easier.

Here are some practical tips to help your children glide smoothly from holiday mode to school mode.

EN FRANCAIS

1. Stock up on Back-to-School Essentials

Preparation is key for a successful start to the academic year.

Begin by checking the school equipment and uniform lists in the Haut-Lac Parent Guidebook, and heading to the shops to buy any missing items. Consider involving your children in the shopping process by letting them choose their notebooks or planners, as this will help them feel more in control and get excited about the new term.

If your children are feeling a bit anxious about studying in English and French, it may be wise to look into good language resources. Knowing they have access to a bilingual dictionary or a language learning app should they need it, may help them feel more prepared to tackle Haut-Lac School’s renowned bilingual English-French programme.

Remember to label all their belongings to avoid any mix-ups at school, especially if you have younger infant and primary children.

2. Set up a Distraction-Free Study Zone

A well-organised, dedicated study space is essential for fostering a productive learning environment at home. This area should be quiet, well-lit and free from distractions.

Personalise this space with educational posters, a whiteboard for jotting down notes, and shelves to keep books and materials organised. Having a tidy, dedicated space helps children focus better and develop a positive association with studying.

3. Build a Well-Rounded Routine

With the new academic year comes the challenge of balancing schoolwork, extra-curricular activities and relaxation.

Sit down with your children to create a daily schedule that accommodates all their needs. This will help them develop time management skills and give them a sense of control over their day.

You will need to include time for homework, but also for sports, hobbies and downtime. A good time to do this is mid-August, once your children and teens have registered for one or more of the 150 extra-curricular clubs and activities available at Haut-Lac International Bilingual School.

4. Develop Healthy Self-Care Habits

Self-care is essential for overall well-being, especially during the busy school term. Encourage your children to maintain a regular sleep schedule, as consistent bed- and wake-up times will help regulate their internal clocks and make early school mornings easier.

Incorporate healthy eating habits into their routines. Regular hydration and balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains will provide the energy they need for active days, so they won’t feel the need for that quick sugary fix.

Physical activity is also a key component of self-care. Whether it's a sport, a dance class, or even a daily walk, ensure your children have some form of exercise in their routine to help with their physical health, reduce stress and improve their mood.

Mindfulness practices can be beneficial too. Simple activities like deep breathing exercises, meditation or even journaling can help children manage stress and stay focused.

Similarly, by encouraging your child to share their thoughts, worries and excitement about the term with you, you will be able to understand what they're feeling and reassure them if necessary. Such talks will not only boost their confidence and help them start the year with a positive mindset, they are also a great way to strengthen your bond with them.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for the new academic year doesn’t have to be stressful. With a bit of planning and organisation, you can help your children start the term on the right foot.

By getting equipped, creating a productive study area, planning a balanced daily schedule, and developing healthy self-care habits, they will be well-prepared for a fun, successful school year at Haut-Lac International Bilingual School. And have learnt valuable skills for life too.

Here's to a fantastic new term!
