WHERE IS HAUT-LAC ALUMNA RUBY NOW

Written by Ruby Rogers | 16 April 2025

Graduating from Haut-Lac International Bilingual School in 2023 marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my academic journey.

Today, I am studying Natural Sciences at Homerton College, University of Cambridge, with a focus on environmental sciences.

EN FRANCAIS

Looking back, my time at Haut-Lac School played a pivotal role in shaping my path, from the subjects I chose to the skills I developed along the way.

How I Chose My Path

I always knew that I wanted to study something environmental and work in that sector, but it took a while to decide on my academic direction.

That was a process influenced by multiple factors and a lot of advice from teachers. One key decision was taking Higher Level Mathematics, which initially felt intimidating. However, the encouragement from my teachers gave me the confidence to persevere, and now I realize how essential that foundation has been for my studies in Cambridge.

Beyond the classroom, my extra-curricular activities also played a significant role in shaping my interests. As a member of the Haut-Lac Environmental Committee, I was encouraged to participate in the Young Reporters for the Environment Programme.

For my article, I interviewed local members of the Green Party on pesticide use and its environmental impacts. This experience reinforced my passion for environmental science and policy, pushing me to explore real-world applications of what I was learning in class.

What I Learnt during the IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme at Haut-Lac School was demanding but incredibly rewarding. I graduated with 44 points, and the skills I developed continue to benefit me at university.

One of the most valuable lessons I took away was time management. Balancing multiple Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay, and Theory of Knowledge alongside extra-curriculars taught me how to stay organized under pressure. Now, at university, those skills help me manage a rigorous workload more effectively.

Another unexpected advantage has been my background in English Language and Literature. Writing extended essays and analytical pieces during the IB made university assignments far less daunting. Many of my peers, who haven’t written substantial essays in years, struggle with this aspect.

My Advice for Current Students at Haut-Lac School

If I had one piece of advice for current Haut-Lac students, it would be to stay on top of deadlines, but to avoid letting stress take over. The IBDP can be intense, but it also offers incredible rewards, both academically and personally.

Make time to enjoy your school years, build strong friendships, and explore your passions through extra-curriculars. Whether it's writing, debating or scientific research, these experiences will shape your future in ways you might not expect.

Final Thoughts

Haut-Lac School provided me with a strong foundation both academically, and in critical thinking, resilience and adaptability.

I am incredibly grateful for the guidance I received and the experiences that prepared me for university life.

For those still on their IB journey, embrace the challenge, stay curious and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.
